First timer at Control Conference

So since I was in Utrecht yesterday, I popped by Control Conference, a yearly games conference arranged in the Netherlands.

Considering I am not great at networking, or events, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Crowds make me anxious, and being, on average, about 30 centimeters shorter than most people around me (DUTCH PEOPLE ARE SO DAMN TALL!) is never a pleasant experience. I was determined to give it a try though – I wanted to see the place for myself, and since I was in Utrecht anyway, I would have been silly not to go.

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised.

#ConCon17 was actually a relatively small event, but with a bunch of interesting talks. I also met up with my old team from IGAD, Kuality Games (who were presenting Bolt Storm), as well as another classmate.

My favorite talks were the Video Games UI history talk, as well as the presentation from Aida, the art lead of Wispfire. Another thing that had me simply gawking in awe was the animation talk about the robotic animals of Horizon: Zero Dawn. So much talent and art under one rooftop is mind-boggling!

At the end of a very long day my mind was just buzzing with inspiration. I really want to try animating Nayanna with Live2D sometime! All the things I want to do and try out… 🙂

On my long train ride home, I’d decided I’m going to start attending more of these events whenever possible. It’s a great opportunity to get to know some of the peeps in the games industry in the Netherlands, and generally have a good time.
